My studio is in an old Elevator Factory building in Cleveland. I love it. It has enormous windows, one facing the elevated train tracks that run through town, the other facing the many red brick buildings surrounding the area. Oddly,I am just a few blocks from Lake Erie, but you would never know, since it is mostly industrial along the lakefront.

I always bring my little Chihuahua mutt Little Bit to my studio. She is 12 years old and sits with me while I paint. My floors are always trashed because I paint on the floor, usually only using my easel to prop up nearly finished works for decision making.

Because Cleveland can be very grey in the winter, you can see my heater and my lights that I paint by: a big tungsten light for warmth of lighting, which works as a nice heater, and a large fluorescent bulb. My antique architect table is from an estate sale. I bought it very cheaply and the large cabinet in the corner is from another estate sale. It was found in the garage and it’s perfect for storing paints. The vibe of this studio is amazing.

Please join us tomorrow, Friday, January 27th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the opening reception for In Case it Rains in Heaven, featuring photographs by Kurt Tong.

Egyptian pharaohs entombed themselves with their riches; Chinese emperors were buried with effigies of their armies—but a Ferrari for the afterlife? In Case it Rains in Heaven documents the curious Chinese modern-day practice of Joss paper offerings for the deceased. As Kurt relates, in Chinese culture, many believe that the dead are unable to carry their possessions with them. It is therefore up to their ancestors and loved ones to properly equip them for the afterlife. The practice of Joss paper offerings has been outlawed in China, yet the custom continues to be tolerated due to its deep roots in Chinese culture. The photographs in this exhibition are shot in front of a simple black backdrop, allowing the offerings to speak for themselves.

Jen Bekman Gallery is pleased to be participating in the 2011 PULSE Miami Contemporary Art Fair. The fair opens with a VIP preview at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 1st, and it remains open through Sunday, December 4th, at 5:00 p.m.

The gallery will debut a selection of new works from artists Michelle Muldrow, Christian Chaize, Carrie Marill, as well as a selection of paintings from Sarah McKenzie, who is named one of the 100 artists to watch in the December/January edition of Modern Painters.

Good news, photographers: You have one more week to finish your submissions. The Hey, Hot Shot! Second Edition 2011 competition deadline has been extended. All entries must now be submitted by Monday, November 21st, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
