Happy Memorial Day!

Jen Bekman Gallery will be CLOSED on Sunday, May 27th, for Memorial Day Weekend

Grab a hot dog and enjoy the sunshine this weekend to commemorate our American soldiers. The gallery will be closed on Sunday, May 27th in celebration of the holiday weekend. We will reopen during regular gallery hours starting next week, so stop by to see Mike Sinclair's exhibition Public Assembly! An American photographer who has built his craft around documenting the holidays, rituals, and gatherings of our unique culture.

 

Public Assembly by Mike Sinclair | Reception and Installation Shots

Installation and reception shots of Mike Sinclair's Public Assembly are up on the Jen Bekman Gallery Flickr page. Mike Sinclair flew in for the reception, to be joined by other Midwesterners originally from Kansas City, Missouri. The crowd wasn't the only part of the show from the Mid-West, the photographs in Public Assembly were shot in various parts of Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois. Be sure to stop in and see the show, which is on view until June 24th.

Kent Rogowski New Work: Everything I Wish I Could Be

Kent Rogowski has a new body of work titled Everything I Wish I Could Be. The series centers on the vast variety of self-help books available today. As quoted by Rogowski:

I am interested in the larger questions of how we communicate and deal with moments of pain and change and the commonalities of those experiences, as well as, the patterns and contradictions that are often inherent in language, advice and differing philosophies.

Kent Rogowski also has two upcoming group shows, at David Winton Bell Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island and Rayko Photo Center in San Francisco.

Please join us this Friday, May 11th for the opening of Public Assembly by Mike Sinclair. The opening will be held from 6-8pm, here at the Jen Bekman Gallery.

Seeking out the quintessentially American celebrations and rituals in his Midwestern stomping grounds, Sinclair’s portraits of sun-dappled barbecues, baseball games and fairgrounds possess both a comfort and wonderment in their honesty. Finding himself in crowds where he is often staring at the spectacle that everyone else is immersed in, Sinclair’s images of these loosely organized forms of congregation ruminate on the American experience, poetically lifting the ordinary into the idyllic.

Public Assembly will be on view until June 24th.

Mike Sinclair Spotlighted in the Huffington Post

Make sure to check out this exciting review of Mike Sinclair's work in the Huffington Post! The review is under Haiku Reviews, a section of the website dedicated to critic's reviews of current exhibitions and performances. 

Peter Frank on Sinclairs work, "Whether shooting city parks in early spring or attendees at municipal board meetings, Sinclair awakens our eyes to fleeting patterns and textures, and to the way they recapture incident and atmosphere in a novelistic rather than journalistic way."

Also, be sure to stop by Jen Bekman Gallery this month to see Mike Sinclair's new solo show Public Assembly. This exhibition will be on display from May 12th through June 24th, with an opening reception on May 11th from 6-8 pm.

Chikara Umihara Featured in New Book Long Lonely Swims

JBG artist Chikara Umihara is featured in a new book Long Lonely Swims. Long Lonely Swims is a collection of photographs based on Haruki Murakami's short story, Nausea 1979. Click here to view other Umihara work.

 

New Work by Sarah McKenzie

Sarah McKenzie has been working intently in the studio for her upcoming group show, Continental Drift. The show will run from July 13th-September 23rd at MCA Denver, then be on display in the Aspen Art Museum from October 19th - November 25th.  Here's the show description, as conceived by curators Nora Abrams and Jacob Proctor:

"Continental Drift brings together the work of seven Colorado-based artists, each of whom explores the idea of place in diverse and thoughtful ways. Ranging fr

om specific studies of both historical sites and contemporary ruins to more abstract or conceptual examinations of space, these artists demonstrate a collective preoccupation with place and setting. While some seek to unearth a specific history in Colorado, others are interested in the ideas and objects that define sites and establish the contours of spaces we all inhabit. This exhibition will include works in film, photography, sculpture, painting, drawing and installation that reflect this singular idea in manifold ways. 

Artists included are: Christina Battle, Scott Johnson, Jeanne Liotta, Sarah McKenzie, Adam Milner, Yumi Roth, and Edie Winograde."

Next month, Jen Bekman Gallery will be participating in PULSE Contemporary Art Fair. PULSE is a leading art fair currently in its seventh edition, which serves as a way for diverse galleries to showcase emerging and renowned contemporary artists. The fair will be held at the Metropolitan Pavilion from May 3rd through May 6th. The gallery will be displaying work from Carrie Marill, Michelle Muldrow, Sarah McKenzie, Christian Chaize, and Beth Dow. Tickets can be purchased here.
